Tord Boontje was born in Enschede, Netherlands in 1968. He first studied industrial design at the famous Design Academy of Eindhoven and later got his masters from the Royal College of Art in London. In 1996 he founded Studio Tord Boontje.
Tord Boontje believes in a delicate marriage of design with emotion that is as broadly accessible as it is enticing. He draws from the belief, that "modernism does not mean minimalism, contemporary does not forsake tradition, and technology does not abandon people and senses" His designs often temper edges with softness, borrow inspiration from nature and employ a decor of forms and layers to engage and entice an observer's imagination and emotions.
The Icarus lamp shade by Tord Boontje is a light design with a story behind it. Remember the story of Daedalus and Icarus, who made wings of feathers and wax to escape from the evil King Minos of Crete? Things turned out OK for Daedalus, but less so for Icarus who flew too close to the sun, lost his wings and fell to his doom.
One of the favourite lighting designs from Tord Boontje, the stunning Icarus is a tumbling swathe of feathers - light, ethereal and dynamic. Its size and arresting design mean it will be the centerpiece of any interior it's put in: the pieces form simply demands attention. The idea for the Icarus light shade started as an experiment with cutting paper to create a dimensional form for light, discovering a structure with overlapping feather shapes that resembled a swan's wing.
Tord Boontje 's Icarus lamp shade has a complete drop of 78cm and is rated for bulbs up to 60 watts.
