What is your approach to design? Stories play a big role in my design, although they never overrule. I want the end results to be so desirable that they are cherished by the user, and I pay great attention not only to the deeper meaning of the product but also to the chosen craft techniques and details of the forms. I find inspiration in the peculiar stories that cling to old techniques and objects, and like to rearrange qualities from the past and present.
What was your inspiration for the Buffer lamp ? I wanted to design something that is beautiful, fragile and tells a story; to evoke emotions from the user.
You might be forgiven for thinking that porcelain is an odd choice of material out of which to make an entire lamp. However, designer Wieki Somers has pulled off an inspired feat with the Buffer Lamp. A graduate of the Eindhoven Academy, Wieki specializes in glassware, and has been working extensively with design house Droog.
The Buffer Lamp is cleverly designed to product a superb quality of light. The bulb is contained within the porcelain mantle, the interior of which is lined with gold-coloured finish. The light reflects around the interior of the lamp before emerging with a rich, warm intensity that focuses into a broad, well-defined pool underneath.
