About Dutch by Design

Founded in 2003, DutchByDesign.com specialises in supplying contemporary lighting and funky home accessories from Dutch designers.

The idea for the company started off in 2002 when founder Venka de Rooij spotted a gap in the market for contemporary lighting and quirky home accessories that were original, witty and stylish.

“I am always on the look out for stylish designs that can reflect a person's sense of style and personality. Being Dutch, that means Dutch Design. I never imagined that DutchByDesign would grow into the company what it is today” says Venka. “We have a great team and fantastic customers who have all helped to make this happen!”

Passion for Contemporary Design Lighting & Home Accessories

Passionate about Dutch design, we are always on the look out for new contemporary lighting and funky home accessories that are not available anywhere else! We were the first to introduce many new designs to the UK, including Tord Boontje’s Midsummer and Icarus lights and designs from up-and-coming designers.

Dutch Design Philosophy

So what makes Dutch Design so different?

In the Netherlands, we pride ourselves on our eye for great design, and our unique approach to it:
We like to think out of the box and approach design with fresh eyes and an open mind – we love originality.
Less is (usually) more. We love clarity and simplicity and strive for it in everything we do.
We love a touch of ironic humour. We love products that have been designed with wit and flair.
We admire designers that take a conceptual approach, designing their products outwards from a core idea.
Function is as important as form. We think the best design takes a consensual approach that reconciles the two.
